We love names that mean something to us personally. The Last Sandwich is a doff of the caving helmet to some impressive discoveries made in Ogof (Welsh for cave) Draenen that our founding winemaker was involved in. Apparently, they were literally sitting down to devour their last sandwich of the day when they spied an obscure way on. Ironically, this blend came about in much the same way. They had tried blending both this particular Viognier and Albarino every which way with other varietals. Finally hitting upon blending them together while literally fighting over the last chicken tikka panini. Don't be fooled if you google it. There is a rock climbing route and a horror short of the same name but it is the underground labyrinth discovery that was the true inspiration.
With fruit this good we can keep the heavy hand of oak at bay. A mere 25% sees some sort of cooperage whether it be once used oak or a puncheon, or two, of acacia. Albarino is one of the crisper varietals and the above regime really lets the refreshing citrus characters shine through. We also do all we can to capture the Viogniers aromatics with long slow almost icy cold ferments. Consequently, our yeast choice is vital.
Morro View is one of the newer plantings of Albarino in the heart of Edna Valley. It holds great promise being directly on the line of eroded volcanic plugs that end spectacularly in Morro Rock. The sea breezes are very much in evidence cooling the crop and extending the growing season. Both Viognier vineyards are physically close to Brecon Estate and have correspondingly similar terroir.
